Más Compost Menos Basura

Más Compost, Menos Basura prevents waste from entering the Doña Juana landfill in Bogotá, Colombia. They make it easy for homes, restaurants, and companies to compost their food waste by providing air-tight buckets, wood shavings for odor prevention, and weekly pick-up services. In return, they supply bags of compost fertilizer or fresh ecologically grown produce on a quarterly basis. Más Compost, Menos Basura uses their platforms to raise environmental awareness and coordinate local environmental action. They conduct workshops and training programs on home composting, gardening, and related environmental topics and provide logistics support for local environmental partners that offer cooking oil collection, plastic recycling, and refill services. Más Compost, Menos Basura is a social enterprise initiative of the local not-for-profit organization Sugamuxi Tu y Yo.


MA's Happy Life Kitchen

MA’s Foods is a leading Sri Lankan food processor that has been working directly with rural farmers for more than 25 years and is committed to social and environmental responsibility. Their organic certified line includes spices, curry pastes, coconut milk, sauces, chutneys, sambols, curries, soups, pasta, and flours. MA's not only pays fair prices to all farmers, they also helped establish the Sustainable Agri-Farmers Enterprise Network (SAFE NET) which enables small-scale farmers to be fair trade certified, expand their market opportunities, and receive fair trade premiums to support community initiatives. In war-affected Kilinochchi, they developed a not-for-profit initiative to support local nutrition and livelihoods and help develop the food industry in the north. MA's provides accommodation and meals for workers and school supplies for their children. They have composting and recycling systems and ISO Environmental Management certification. MA's is a member of the Business and Biodiversity Platform under the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.


Mashjar Juthour

Mashjar Juthour is an arboretum and environmental initiative on the outskirts of Ramallah that was started to preserve Palestine's natural heritage, protect local wildlife, and educate and engage the local community in environmental activism. They have been restoring the land, rebuilding traditional stone wall terraces, and planting indigenous trees since 2013. Mashjar Juthour composts food waste from a local restaurant, purchases organic goat manure from a nearby farm, uses ash from local bakeries as pest control, plants alfalfa, fava, and other legumes as green manure, and practices rainwater harvesting. They host school visits, yoga, volunteer days, harvest events, foraging programs, guided walks, workshops, Family Fridays, and more. Mashjar Juthour has developed tree guides, coloring sheets, activity books, and games to help kids learn about the environment and Palestine's natural heritage. They receive support from Handmade Palestine, a fair trade handicraft initiative.


Mathura

Mathura produces healthy and affordable natural food using ethically and sustainably sourced ingredients from small-scale farmers in northern Sri Lanka. They specialize in cold-pressed oils, spice blends, ghee, paneer, and other dairy products. Mathura promotes sustainable agriculture practices to protect the environment, ensure animal welfare and support the health and wellbeing of future generations. They visit the farmers to make sure synthetic agrichemicals are not used on fodder or food crops. Mathura donates to Heartfulness Sri Lanka and conducts free classes and workshops in rural villages on meditation, healthy living, and addiction prevention.


Matr Boomie

Matr Boomie is a fair trade collection that blends the traditional artforms of India with a timeless and modern design aesthetic, bringing people and cultures closer together. They offer housewares, jewelry, bags, accessories, stationery, games, and other handcrafted products made from responsible materials including recycled metal, upcycled textiles, vegetable tanned leather, natural jute, hogla, and clay, sustainably harvested wood, local cotton, and plant-based or azo-free dyes. Matr Boomie works with over 1,500 artisans in marginalized communities throughout India to create economic and sustainable living opportunities. Their artisan partners are committed to fair living wages, safe working conditions, no child labor, and environmentally responsible practices. They address the gender inequality gap and empower women artisans through vocational training, literacy programs, self help groups, and financial independence. Matr Boomie has invested in water filtration systems, solar heating and lighting, tools and safety equipment, health camps, eyeglasses, emergency relief funds, education programs, and community development projects in India. They also contribute to organizations working on homelessness in Austin, Texas. Matr Boomie is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.


Mattakuliya Animal Welfare

Mattakuliya Animal Welfare is dedicated to improving the lives of animals in their community. They mobilize resources and volunteers to feed, foster, rehome, vaccinate, sterilize, and care for street dogs and cats in need. The Animal Welfare team aims to provide a voice for the voiceless and raise awareness about the humane treatment of animals.


Matteo Pistono

Matteo Pistono is a writer and meditation teacher. As an author, his purpose is to communicate narratives that uplift and educate individuals and society. Matteo's writings have been translated into multiple languages and include the following books: Roar: Sulak Sivaraksa and the Path of Socially Engaged Buddhism, Meditation: Coming to Know Your Mind, Fearless in Tibet: The Life of the Mystic Tertön Sogyal, and In the Shadow of the Buddha: One Man's Journey of Discovery in Tibet. Books are donated to prisons and to libraries in low income communities. Matteo contributes a percent of profits from book sales to not-for-profit organizations focused on environmental conservation and ocean cleanup like Surfrider Foundation and Changing Tides Foundation.

Matthew's House

Matthew's House exists to provide hospitality and hope for people who are homeless and vulnerable in the heart of Swansea. The building includes a full commercial kitchen and cafe area, showers, a laundry room, lounge, meeting room, and auditorium. Matt's Cafe intercepts food waste that was destined for landfill, uses it to provide warm meals on a pay-as-you-feel basis, and provides work opportunities to people who are long-term unemployed. Matt's Showers and Laundry are accessible on a referral basis. Matt’s Cwtsh is a safe space where trained volunteers provide support and friendly advocacy to anyone in need. The Homeless Period Swansea initiative collects, creates, and distributes Dignity Packs to vulnerable women and men who cannot afford essential hygiene products. Hope in Swansea is a smartphone app that makes it easier to find accurate and up-to-date information on essential support services in the local area. Matthew's House operates on a not-for-profit basis and uses all donations and funds to continue and expand their support services.


Matyodesign

Matyodesign produces hand-embroidered clothing, accessories, and housewares to preserve Matyó culture, pass it on to younger generations, and create livelihood opportunities for women in rural Hungary. Their jackets, ponchos, vests, dresses, blouses, T-shirts, sweatshirts, bags, bedding, and other products are available online. Matyodesign also organizes immersive travel experiences and team-building programs in the village of Tard in northeastern Hungary. Visitors are able to try traditional hand embroidery, cooking, and clothing, visit the Matyodesign sewing studio, and explore local culture through workshops, museum visits, and other activities. All initiatives are designed to support the local community. Matyodesign prioritizes sustainably sourced materials, minimizes environmental impact through localized small-batch production, and offers custom embroidery services for pre-loved clothing.


Maus Organic

Maus Organic clothing is versatile comfortwear designed and ethically made in Sri Lanka from 100% organic cotton. All colored items are made with nontoxic and natural dyes. Maus focuses on quality wardrobe essentials that can be worn for years. They retail natural washing powder for environmentally responsible fabric care. Maus donates to Lanka Alzheimer's Foundation, Sunera Foundation, and the International Christmas Charity Bazaar.


Mavis by Herrera

Mavis by Herrera was started to reduce plastic pollution, empower women entrepreneurs and artisans, and support children in need. They specialize in designer handbags that are crafted from recycled plastic filament or natural fiber. Each upcycled bag contains 57 plastic bottles. Packaging is minimal and made from recycled cartons to reduce waste. Through their Retire a Mavis by Herrera Bag program, customers can return a bag at least a year after purchase for a discount on a new bag. The returned bags are either cleaned and donated to low income groups or remade into new bags. Mavis by Herrera provides flexible livelihood opportunities for single mothers and other women that are unable to pursue traditional employment due to family responsibilities. They pay above market rates and offer training programs to help artisans thrive in life and business. Mavis by Herrera donates a portion of all profits to Shoes for Stars, Breast Cancer Angels, and nonprofit organizations in the San Diego area.


MaxKnives

Max Knives specializes in handcrafted knives. Each piece is custom made in their workshop in southern Sri Lanka from natural, sustainably sourced materials. A portion of profits is used to support families in need.


Mayamam Weavers

Mayamam Weavers is a women's weaving cooperative in Cajolá, Guatemala that creates handwoven housewares and accessories for modern living, inspired by the rich colors, patterns, and traditional weaving techniques of Mayan culture. Products are made from cotton with azo free dyes. The cooperative emerged when a group of women came together to explore ways to create jobs within their community as an alternative to migrating to the United States and separating their families. All members earn fair trade wages and learn the skills to run a business. They also provide onsite childcare and adult literacy classes for the community. Mayamam Weavers is registered in the United States to market the products of Tejedoras Maya Mam. They support the cooperative with loans, equipment purchases, training, and scholarships for workers and their family members. For every order, one sapling is donated to their reforestation project in Guatemala. Mayamam Weavers is part of Fair Trade Federation, NYC Fair Trade Coalition, and Weave a Real Peace (WARP).


Mayan Hands

Mayan Hands is a fair trade nonprofit dedicated to providing economic and educational opportunities to Mayan women and girls, so that they can build sustainable futures for themselves, their families, and their communities. It began in the early 1990s when many Mayan communities were engulfed in the Guatemalan civil war. Today, Mayan Hands partners with more than 200 women artisans in the highlands of rural Guatemala. They create handwoven clothing, bags, accessories, and housewares on traditional back strap looms, unique pine needle and wild grass baskets, and felted wool animals and ornaments. In addition to paying fair wages, Mayan Hands offers training in new skills and techniques, micro-lending, scholarships and school supplies for artisans' children, and classes in product design, business and leadership development, gender awareness, domestic violence prevention, conflict resolution, and herbal medicine. In order to partner with Mayan Hands, the women must be part of a cooperative or democratically organized group. This enables members to participate in decisions about their work, ensures that income is fairly distributed, and provides opportunities for skill sharing and mutual support. Mayan Hands is a founding member of the Fair Trade Federation and is registered as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.


MAYO Designs

MAYO Designs offers web design and marketing solutions for organizations that share their passion for making the world a better place. They focus on maximizing results and minimizing waste. Services include brand positioning, content strategy, web design, development, hosting, and maintenance, data-driven marketing, and sustainability consulting. MAYO Designs is a certified B Corporation and a member of 1% for the Planet and New Hampshire Businesses for Social Responsibility (NHBSR).


Mayomi Forest Seed Jewelry

Mayomi specializes in making natural jewelry from Sri Lankan forest seeds, like madati, enthada, and kiridi, and selling them along the trail to Ella's Little Adam's Peak. The initiative was started by the father of the family, and when he passed away, his wife and daughter continued. Mayomi offers a natural, environmentally responsible alternative to plastic jewelry. These forest seeds are also used in traditional Ayurveda.


Mayurbhanj Grand

Mayurbhanj Grand works with tribal producer groups in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha to develop and market indigenous non-timber forest products like handwoven housewares and sal leaf utensils. The focus is on developing an economic model that can be replicated across tribal communities and can support self-sufficiency and sustainable development in what is considered one of the most "backward" areas of India. Tribal women have created their own producer companies and Mayurbhanj Grand assists with raw materials, skill development, mentoring, training, product design, packaging, branding, quality checks, and market access. They provide upfront fair trade payments and annual profit sharing incentives.


MDK Jewellery

MDK Jewellery creates environmentally responsible jewelry by hand in their Midlands studio. They use recycled sterling silver and recycled fine silver to handcraft necklaces, rings, earwear, and bracelets. MDK Jewellery transforms metal scraps into unique one-off pieces, uses natural alternatives to traditional jewelers' chemicals when possible, and prioritizes UK suppliers to reduce carbon emissions and support local businesses. Packaging materials are sustainably sourced and include Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified cardboard, water-based glue, organic cotton bags, and plantable seed paper.


Measure Meant

Measure Meant helps businesses articulate and live out their values in measurable ways, for the purpose of building social and brand capital, managing risk, and bettering our shared world. They specialize in climate planning, sustainability strategies, B Corp certification, environment, social, and governance (ESG) reporting, carbon accounting, life cycle assessments, materiality assessments, and TRUE zero waste certification. Measure Meant provides pro bono services for community organizations working on environmental stewardship and donates five percent of annual sales to nonprofit organizations. They are a certified B Corporation and a member of 1% for the Planet, B Local PDX, and Business for a Better Portland (BBPDX). Measure Meant is registered in Washington as a Social Purpose Corporation.
