Communities Magazine

Communities Magazine was founded in 1972 to share information, stories, and ideas about intentional communities, including urban co-ops, cohousing groups, ecovillages, and rural communes. They explore the joys and challenges of cooperation and provide an educational platform for people interested in intentional community and other cooperative arrangements that emphasize sharing and living locally in balance with one another and the rest of the planet. This includes creating and enhancing community in workplaces, activist organizations, and neighborhoods. Communities Magazine is sustained through subscriptions, donations, and values-aligned advertisements. Each quarterly issue focuses on a specific theme, and subscribers have access to the full archive of back issues for online viewing or download. Communities Magazine is published by Global Ecovillage Network - United States, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. They are a member of the Foundation for Intentional Community, the Cohousing Association of the United States, the Communal Studies Association, and the Global Ecovillage Network.


Community Capacity Builders

Community Capacity Builders supports social entrepreneurs, civic entrepreneurs, and scholar-practitioners to achieve their desired outcomes and contribute towards addressing complex social policy problems through a project-based learning approach. Participants in their Community Leadership Program learn about their community, take a community issue of their choice, and develop a collaborative community capacity building project that addresses their community issue. Participants in their Program for Systems Social Entrepreneurs develop or strengthen initiatives that contribute towards creating systems change and addressing wicked problems. Community Capacity Builders is an autistic owned and led social enterprise. They are a member of the South Australian Social Enterprise Council (SASEC) and a signatory of the Autism Friendly Charter. All surplus is used to support social entrepreneurship and systems change research, development, and advocacy.


Community Development Professionals

Community Development Professionals (CDP) was started in 2003 to help communities across the United States thrive. They provide strategic coaching, training, tools, and services that help local nonprofits, social enterprises, community partnerships, and affordable housing initiatives get organized, access funding, and operate more efficiently and effectively. CDP is committed to an affordable service structure with monthly membership options, payment plans, and scholarships. They donate 10 to 15 percent of all surplus to nonprofits that contribute to thriving communities by providing food, clothing, shelter, and opportunities to people in need. CDP is a member of the Social Enterprise Alliance, Christian Community Development Association, and Butler County Housing and Homeless Coalition.


Community Empowerment

Community Empowerment promotes mutual self-help and cooperative solutions for community resilience, community enterprise, and community economic development. They provide affordable incubation spaces for socially minded enterprises and in-person and online consultancy services. Community Empowerment started in 1999 and has assisted more than 100 community enterprises including community-owned pubs, cafes, wholefood shops, education initiatives, and theater and entertainment groups. They also support local authorities to engage with and enable community economic development. Community Empowerment is a member of Social Enterprise UK and Co-operatives UK. All surplus is reinvested towards their mission.


Community Enterprise

Community Enterprise provides development support, design services, and innovative solutions to help communities and social enterprises across Scotland make ideas a reality. Their development services include strategic planning, feasibility studies, training and mentoring, organizational reviews, evaluation and impact assessments, business plans, community action plans, and fundraising. Their design studio works with charities, social enterprises, and ethical businesses on branding, graphic design, animation, web design, and creative marketing strategies. Community Enterprise was founded in 1987 and has played a strategic role in developing a sustainable third sector in Scotland. They are a founding member of Social Enterprise Scotland and a founding subscriber of the Voluntary Code for Social Enterprise. Community Enterprise is an accredited Living Wage Employer, a Zero Hours Justice Employer, and Disability Confident Committed. They are part of Development Trust Association Scotland, Community Land Scotland, Scottish Community Alliance, and the Social Audit Network. Community Enterprise reinvests 100 percent of their profits back into the communities they serve.


Community Made Solutions

Community Made Solutions supports the empowerment of people and communities through creative partnerships, knowledge sharing, mutual aid, and civic activism to contribute to positive social and environmental change. They specialize in business support for social enterprises and community projects, strategic planning, project management, business modeling, legal structures and governance, fundraising, marketing and communications, impact assessment, and community uses of digital technology. They also organize open events and knowledge-sharing networks. Community Made Solutions is a core partner of Social Enterprise Exchange, which focuses on social enterprise development in South Yorkshire. They are a member of Social Enterprise UK, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), and the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD).


Community Roots

Community Roots builds climate and community resilience, reduces social isolation, and improves health and well-being in Dublin by connecting garden owners with gardenless growers to facilitate learning, skill-sharing, and meaningful connections. Their Soil Mates garden-sharing program is a community matchmaking service that pairs budding growers with garden owners living nearby and provides raised beds, compost, a starter food growing kit, meetups with the wider community, and ongoing guidance. They also offer community development and training programs on growing, preparing, and sharing food. Community Roots converts unused concrete into front gardens and partners with public and private institutions to develop and manage additional growing spaces. They are a not-for-profit organization and reinvest all surplus towards their mission.


Community TV Network

Community TV Network (CTVN) empowers Chicago's youth through the creative and collaborative process of modern video production. They started as a special project of the Alternative Schools Network in 1974, became an independent nonprofit in 1980, and launched Hard Cover as a youth-produced local cable news program in 1986. CTVN offers professional development workshops, in-school and after-school programs, a digital media leadership track program, and professional video production services for Chicago area clients. Hard Cover is now available online and is one of the longest-running youth-produced shows in the United States. All CTVN programs promote youth voices and positive community development. They give students the awareness, motivation, and tools they need to create positive futures for themselves and the people around them. CTVN is registered as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and reinvests all surplus towards their mission.


Community Wood Recycling

Community Wood Recycling has been reducing wood waste, saving resources, creating workplace opportunities, and changing lives since 1998. They started by developing a commercial wood waste collection service in Brighton, supplying reclaimed timber for home and garden projects, creating recycled wooden products for local use, and providing volunteer opportunities, training, and pathways to employment for people who have been excluded from the workforce. They now serve as a national network of wood recycling social enterprises across the United Kingdom. The network has provided training to thousands of people and saved hundreds of thousands of tons of wood from becoming waste. Community Wood Recycling is an accredited Living Wage Employer and a member of Social Enterprise UK, Wood Recyclers Association, and Social Firms Europe CEFEC. They are registered as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and reinvest all surplus towards their mission.


ComMutiny - The Youth Collective

ComMutiny - The Youth Collective builds empowering spaces and ecosystems to nurture the leadership potential of young people to become "Jagriks" and transform self and society. Jagrik combines "jagruk," meaning awakened and aware, and "nagrik," meaning citizen, and is used to refer to awakened, active citizens. The initiative was started by more than 200 youth-centric organizations and practitioners across India. Together, they cocreate innovative open source training materials, games, and toolkits to build the capacity of youth workers and organize youth leadership journeys, campaigns, and large scale public initiatives across India. ComMutiny actively participates in other forums and alliances including Catalyst 2030, Youth for Sustainability Alliance, Learning Planet, and Commonwealth Alliance of Youth Workers Association (CAYWA). All profits are reinvested towards their mission of "every youth a Jagrik, every space nurturing Jagriks."


Compost Education Centre

Compost Education Centre reconnects people in Victoria, British Columbia with simple, land-based resiliency practices that enable the land and all living beings to thrive. They steward urban gardens and organize child and youth workshops, adult education, the Healing City Soils program, Victoria Seedy Saturday events, and public outreach campaigns. Compost Education Centre maintains a learning resource center, a natural building classroom, and teaching gardens to support access to nutritious foods and foster community connections. They supply educational resources, composting equipment, local organic seeds, plants, and fresh produce and host workshops on vermicomposting, organic gardening, soil health, seed saving, waste reduction, rainwater harvesting, and other topics. Services are provided on a pay-what-you-can basis. Compost Education Centre is a Buy Social Canada Certified Social Enterprise and a member of Good Food Organization. They are registered as a not-for-profit organization and reinvest all surplus towards their mission.


ConnectHear

ConnectHear bridges the communication gap between the deaf community and the rest of society and gives deaf individuals the tools they need for accessible communication and independent living. They train and certify Pakistani Sign Language interpreters and provide professional onsite and video call interpretation services. These services are free for deaf individuals and paid for by event organizers, workplaces, emergency hotlines, banks, hospitals, shops, and other institutional partners. ConnectHear also offers audio to sign language software, sign language video production, workshops on deaf accessibility, sign language training programs for hearing people, and ConnectTV, an infotainment channel with sign language interpreted content. They use their platform to create awareness about the deaf community, teach common sign language phrases, aand create opportunities for deaf people to share their stories and perspectives. ConnectHear is part of the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters and Pakistan Association of the Deaf.


Connecting2Ability

Connecting2Ability (C2A) was founded in 1953 to provide individualized care and inclusive opportunities for people with disability in Victoria. Their community hubs offer activities and programs to build independence, increase social interaction and community engagement, and improve wellbeing. C2A's employment programs provide skills training, personal development, and increased financial independence for people with disability and help organizations use their buying power to generate social value. Their teams of supported employees and disability support workers provide a wide range of commercial services including grounds and garden maintenance, fleet vehicle cleaning, commercial cleaning, screenprinting, assembly and packaging, recycling, secondhand shops, and timber furniture production. They use responsibly sourced local timber and donate timber scraps and dust for local reuse. C2A is a registered National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider, a Social Traders Certified Social Enterprise, and a member of Social Enterprise Network of Victoria (SENVIC). All surplus is reinvested towards their mission.


Connecting NER

Connecting NER aims to support artisans from the north east region (NER) of India, share their stories, and protect their heritage crafts. They specialize in practical household products like trays, baskets, bins, rugs, and mats that are made from locally available raw materials like cane, bamboo, kauna reeds, and water hyacinth. Customers can select from available products, get existing designs made to order, or work with Connecting NER to create custom designs.


Connection Crew

Connection Crew provides teams of talented people to solve complex production challenges and creates employment pathways for people affected by homelessness. They specialize in crewing services for film, television, theater, festivals, events, construction, and facilities management. Connection Crew works with charity partners to reach people who are at risk or have lived experience of homelessness and could benefit from their training, mentoring, and employment opportunities. They are tracking their carbon footprint, working towards net zero, and offsetting through the albert's Creative Offset scheme, which is run in partnership with Ecologi. Connection Crew is a registered Community Interest Company (CIC), an accredited Living Wage Employer, and a member of Social Enterprise UK.


Connections Arts Centre (CAC)

Connections Arts Centre (CAC) provides accessible arts and lifestyle programs in Dublin and assists people with disabilities to overcome barriers that lead to them being devalued and excluded from their communities. They design and deliver community education programs at their arts space in Rathgar, provide accessibility training, initiate and manage community projects that empower the disability community, and connect transition-year students and adults with disabilities for mutual learning and development. By creating inclusive, safe spaces where participants can explore, create, and connect, they change the perception and visibility of people with disabilities in their communities. CAC is a member of the Social Enterprise Republic of Ireland, Social Entrepreneurs Initiative, Open Doors Initiative, and Terenure Enterprise Centre. They are a not-for-profit organization and reinvest all surplus towards their mission.


Conscious Courage Yoga Collective

Conscious Courage Yoga Collective works to provide the mental, physical, and social benefits of yoga in a safe environment and supports mothers to have a positive pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum experience. They offer private home and online classes, group sessions, retreats, workshops, professional development programs, post-yoga teacher training mentorship, prenatal yoga, and continuous physical, informational, and emotional support for pregnant mothers. Conscious Courage Yoga Collective provides discounts for local identity card holders.


Conscious Jipsi

Conscious Jipsi offers a coliving and cowork space on Sri Lanka's south coast and campaigns for sustainable brands and causes with a focus on fashion, tourism, and personal care. By introducing recycling, composting, upcycling, and other waste reduction strategies, they hope to inspire their guests and their community to make positive choices for the environment. Conscious Jipsi supports the Thalpe Recycling Center.


Conservation Carbon Company

Conservation Carbon Company offers forestry-based carbon sequestration services. They coordinate reforestation and forest management projects, conduct biodiversity assessments and labeling, quantify carbon sequestration, and support carbon insetting. Projects are designed to meet international protocols and standards. Conservation Carbon Company plans forestry projects to provide biodiversity corridors and strengthen ecosystems. They also work with communities to develop non-timber forest products and improve local livelihoods. Multidisciplinary teams routinely monitor and evaluate environmental and socioeconomic indicators for each project.
